Frequently Asked Questions

I may be interested in becoming a client of Iris Mental Health & Wellness

Why should I come to Iris Mental Health & Wellness?

At Iris, we make it easy for you to combine approaches to create a plan that’s right for YOU. No more having to go to multiple locations, get your providers to all talk to each other or send notes, and internal collaboration for best care and privacy!

Do you have evening or weekend hours?

Some of our professionals offer later day appointments. Unfortunately, we do not have weekend hours.

How will I know if a provider will be a good fit?

Like test-driving a car, you usually know within the first session or two if you will ‘click’ with someone. And if you don’t feel that ‘click’, contact us, and we can schedule you with another provider! We will not be offended.

Do you prescribe medication? Are medications safe if I am pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or lactating?

We have two Nurse Practitioners with expertise in mental health, as well as advanced training about safety of medications during pregnancy and lactation. We have had many people tell us that another provider told them that it wasn’t safe to take psychotropic medications. The evidence shows that this is not the case.

How do I make an appointment?

Fill out our appointment request form online, indicate your preferences, and the services you are interested in, and you will be contacted with openings.

Information about appointments

What can I expect from a first appointment?

Depending on the service, filling out the paperwork in advance will allow us to ask you for any information that we need to give you the best care. The first appointment for therapy or medication evaluation is mostly about building rapport, and letting you see if you think this will be a good fit.

How long are appointments?

Therapy and medication evaluations tend to last 50 minutes.

Wellness visits vary by service, lasting from 30-90 minutes. The provider will let you know how long your initial appointment will be in advance.

How do I prepare for a first session?

There isn’t much preparation needed! Fill out the paperwork that you receive via email, plan to arrive a few minutes early, and bring any questions you may have.

Do you offer video or phone sessions?

Yes! You can choose which type of session, in office or virtual, when you schedule.

Payment for appointments

Do you take my insurance?

For therapy and medication management, the answer is “most likely!” Visit our fees page to see the list of insurance companies that we are in-network with. We are not in-network with Medicare (even if your Medicare plan is with a carrier that we are in-network for, like BCBS, Health Partners, etc.). It is a good idea to double check with your insurance plan to make sure that Iris Mental Health & Wellness is listed. Just know that some websites will not list individual provider names.

For wellness services, most are private pay, with the exception of acupuncture, which is covered under some plans. The good news is if you have a HSA or FSA, you can submit the invoice for reimbursement.

How much will appointments cost if I use my insurance?

It depends on your plan. What you can do is call your insurance company, and share the following codes with them, and they can let you know what to expect your out of pocket cost to be, if any. The initial appointment always costs more than ongoing appointments.

Therapy/Mental Health:

Initial session: 90791

Individual follow-up appointments: 90834 or 90837
Couples or family appointments: 90846 or 90847

Group therapy: 90853

Medication Evaluation & Management:

Initial session: 99203-99205
Follow-up appointments: 99213-99205

Acupuncture:

99202
97810 + 97811

How much will appointments cost if I do not have insurance, or do not want to use insurance?

For the services that are billable to insurance, paying out of pocket runs approximately $100-150 per session. Talk with your provider if this is something you would like to arrange.

Why might I not want to use my insurance?

The simplest answer to this is that services billed through insurance have limitations, generally on time. You may find that 50 minutes (especially for trauma work, or couples/family sessions) is barely enough time to get into what you are working on. Since insurance generally doesn’t cover sessions that are longer than 50 minutes, you can arrange to schedule longer appointments, and pay on your own.

Other common questions

Do you work with clients not coming in for perinatal mental health?

While that is our specialty focus, we work with clients coming in for other mental health issues, such as trauma, depression or anxiety not related to perinatal mental health.

For our wellness services, it isn’t necessary to be coming for anything related to mental health! Some people just want to have a healthier lifestyle, look and feel better, or are dealing with chronic pain, injuries or medical issues.

It seems like you only work with moms- what about dads or non-birthing people?

We support ALL parents and parents-to-be!

What if this is an emergency?

Unfortunately, we do not have the ability to be available immediately. If you are in need of emergent help, please:

  • Visit your nearest Emergency Department/hospital

  • Call 911

  • Call the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988
